How to Improve Your Surf Sessions by Training in Madrid
Note: This article was originally published during our Surf Training phase in Madrid. The regular program in Madrid is no longer active, but it is part of the evolution of Carving Social Club and our current way of working with surfing.
Living in Madrid often means days or weeks pass between one surf session and the next.
That's why, at Carving Social Club, we've been looking for ways for years to make the most of that time away from the sea to be better prepared for the next session.
It's not about replacing surfing. You only learn that by surfing. But we can work on many of the skills that we'll need later when we get in the water.

Specific surf training in Madrid
Since 2018, we have been developing our Surf Training program in Madrid at Forus Chamartín, combining pool work and gym training.
During the sessions, we work on aspects directly related to surfing, such as paddling, pop-up, and breath control, along with physical abilities such as endurance, power, coordination, mobility, and balance.
The goal is simple: to arrive at the next surf trip or getaway with more resources and to make better use of the time we have in the sea.

The pool as part of the training
An important part of the program takes place in the pool.
There we can work on paddling, endurance, breathing, and certain movements repeatedly and in a controlled manner, something much more difficult to do when we depend on sea conditions.
Then we combine that work with gym sessions to develop strength, coordination, and other skills necessary for surfing.

Training between one surf session and the next
One of the difficulties of surfing while living in Madrid is that every session counts.
When you can only go to the sea on certain weekends or during your trips, arriving with better physical preparation and with some worked movements can help you make better use of those hours in the water.
That's why our Surf Training was born as another tool within Carving, along with surfskate, trips, and the surf sessions themselves.
We don't pretend to reproduce a wave inside a gym. We seek to work out of the water on what we can train to be better prepared when we return to the sea.
From Surf Training in Madrid to our current work in El Palmar
Update: We no longer offer our regular Surf Training program in Madrid.
Everything learned during those years continues to be part of our way of understanding surf training and teaching from El Palmar.
If you want to spend several days working on your surfing, you can check out our Surfcamps in El Palmar, where we organize sessions by level and combine work in the water with video analysis, surfskate, and other surf-related activities.
And if you already surf independently and are looking for more specific work, you can consult our Surf Specialization programs in El Palmar.
