Carving Social Club Archive

Carving Social Club was born in Madrid in 2011. Before El Palmar became our home base, we spent over a decade experimenting with different ways to learn, train and share surfing away from the sea.

This archive brings together some of the projects, tutorials, meetups, trips, riders and events that shaped Carving into what we do today.

2011 · Carving Social Club is Born

Carving started in Madrid, centred around surfing, surfskating and an idea that would stay with us for years to come: finding ways to keep working on our surfing even if the ocean was hundreds of kilometres away.

In the beginning, everything was much smaller: testing boards, skating, sharing what we were learning and gathering with others who had the same desire to surf even if they lived far from the sea.

2015 · Camoens and the First Years of Community

In January 2015, we launched a campaign to request the repair of the asphalt on Paseo de Camoens, one of our main meeting places in Madrid.

We did not just want to use the space; we wanted to help restore it for everyone who skated there.

A Surf Afternoon in Madrid

The Camoens meetups summed up that period pretty well: we brought boards to share, people who had never tried a surfskate came by, and many afternoons ended simply because there was no light left to keep skating.

Emil Boards and the Back to the Future Skateboard

During those years, models and projects from brands in different countries began to pass through Carving. Emil Boards sent us one of their curious square skateboards from Munich, inspired by Back to the Future and hand-customised with the name Carving Social Club.

2016 · We Started Teaching What We Were Learning

August 2016 · First Surfskate Tutorial

In August 2016, we published our first surfskate tutorial.

From there, we created a series of videos to explain posture, pumping and movements increasingly related to surfing, trying to translate hard-to-explain sensations into something that could be understood, repeated and trained.

The tutorials eventually became one of the best-known parts of Carving, and some accumulated hundreds of thousands of views over the years.

Arnette Surfcity Festival Barcelona

That same year, we were in charge of the Surfskate section sponsored by G-Shock at the Arnette Surfcity Festival in Barcelona.

We brought different boards for the public to try, and our team led the activity throughout the festival.

2017 · Trips Become Part of Carving

Surf & Surfskate Trips in Somo and Loredo

Trips to the sea gained increasing importance within Carving.

Somo and Loredo became one of our regular bases, and we organised around ten trips to the area, combining surf sessions, surfskating and several days sharing the trip with the group.

Many of those trips led to friendships and groups that later continued to meet up to surf or skate together upon returning to Madrid.

2018 · New Ways to Train for Surfing Away From the Sea

Surf Training · Forus Chamartín

In 2018, we began to develop our Specific Surf Physical Preparation programme at Forus Chamartín.

We combined pool and gym sessions to work on paddling, pop-ups, endurance, coordination, breathing and other surfing-related skills.

It was another step in the same pursuit: using time away from the sea to be better prepared for the next surf session.

Descents along La Castellana

Also during this period, we started our descents along La Castellana.

Groups of surfskaters crossed Madrid, using the city itself as a meeting point: skating, sharing lines, trying out boards and maintaining that connection to surfing even when the sea was far away.

Wake Surfing at the San Juan Reservoir

In 2018, we also started wake surfing at the San Juan Reservoir.

The wave generated by the boat allowed us to accumulate time on the board and work on sensations such as weight distribution, balance and certain movements without depending on sea conditions.

Surf Training, surfskating and Wake Surfing were different tools, but they all responded to the same idea: to keep working on our surfing even when we could not be in the ocean.

2019 · More Tools Around Surfing

Carving Social Club 2019

In 2019, Carving brought together surfskate classes, several Surf Training groups, surf trips and a specialised shop that for years allowed us to test systems and equipment from many different brands.

Surf Training continued to grow, and we also began working at Forus Caja Mágica.

Breathing and Apnoea Training Applied to Surfing

We also incorporated specific breathing and apnoea courses with external specialists, expanding our work into aspects such as breath management, safety and responding to demanding situations in the water.

A project developed around safe falling techniques applied to surfskating and injury prevention.

A broader collection of meetups, gatherings, activities and events we organised during those years.

2021 · We Arrive in El Palmar

After ten years of developing Carving from Madrid and organising trips to the coast, in 2021 we arrived in El Palmar.

We opened our own Surf and Surfskate School in Camino de Guerrero and began a new phase in which, for the first time, the project had a stable base by the sea.

2022 · The Surfhouse is Born

The next step was to have a house from which to organise our Surfcamps and spend several days centred around surfing.

The Surfhouse allowed us to combine accommodation, water sessions, surfskating, analysis, training and communal living within the same programme.

2023 · First Anniversary of Our School in El Palmar

Surf, Surfskate and Gym School

We celebrated the first anniversary of our school in El Palmar and a period that brought together surf classes, surfskate, outdoor training and Surfcamps from our Surfhouse.

2024 · We Close a Stage of the School

A New Chapter in El Palmar

After three years in Camino de Guerrero, we closed the school phase to increasingly focus the project on the Surfhouse and Surfcamps.

El Palmar was no longer just one of the places we travelled to. It had become our home base.

2026/2027 · Fifth Season of the Surfhouse

This season we begin the fifth season of our Surfhouse in El Palmar.

Today the project is centred around Surfcamps, surf lessons, our Surf Coaching programmes, and a house that serves as a base for spending several days by the sea.

We Keep Preserving the History

This archive is not intended to cover absolutely everything that has happened since 2011. There are boards, photos, videos, trips, people and projects that we will gradually bring back.
