Wake Surfing in San Juan Reservoir: Another Way to Train for Surfing in Madrid
Note: Article originally published in 2023. Currently, Carving Social Club no longer offers Wake Surf sessions in Madrid.
We continue to look for new ways to practice our surfing when the sea is far away, and this time we're going to San Juan Reservoir.
We are incorporating Wake Surfing as a different activity that allows us to spend time on a board, work on our balance, better understand weight distribution, and enjoy a continuous wave near Madrid.
Wake Surfing at San Juan Reservoir
Wake surfing is practiced on the wave generated by a boat specifically designed for it.
Unlike surfing in the sea, we don't depend on a set of waves arriving, nor do we have to paddle to catch the wave. Once positioned behind the boat, we can concentrate longer on the sensations on the board.

Twenty minutes on a continuous wave
Our sessions last 20 minutes per person.
This time allows participants to get familiar with starting, find a comfortable position on the board, and begin experimenting with weight distribution and some movements.
We do not intend to replace surfing in the sea. They are different situations. But we do find it a fun way to accumulate time on a board and continue exploring certain sensations between one surf session and the next.
A boat designed for Wake Surfing
For these sessions, we use a Moomba Kaiyen, a boat designed to generate a specific wave for Wake Surfing.
Our captain, Manel, handles the navigation while we accompany each participant during their turn.
The activity is open to both people who already surf and those who want to experience the sensation of gliding on a wave for the first time.

Another tool within Carving
For years, we have used different ways to continue working on surfing without the ocean in front of us: surfskate, physical training, swimming pool, breathwork, and now also Wake Surfing.
Each tool has its limits, and none replaces hours in the sea, but all allow us to continue exploring aspects of surfing when we cannot get into the water.

Update: Our regular activity currently takes place in El Palmar, and we no longer offer Wake Surfing in San Juan Reservoir. You can learn about our Surfcamps in El Palmar and the programs we currently develop around surfing.
